7 Warning Signs Your Septic System Is Failing (And What to Do)

June 9, 2026

A failing septic system doesn't usually give you much warning. One day everything seems fine, and the next you've got raw sewage backing up into your home or pooling in your yard. The good news: if you know what to look for, you can catch problems early and avoid a catastrophic — and expensive — failure.

Here are the 7 most common warning signs that your septic system is in trouble.

1. Slow Drains Throughout the House

A single slow drain usually means a clog in that pipe. But when multiple drains throughout your home are sluggish — sinks, showers, toilets — that points to a problem much deeper in the system, often a full or failing tank.

Don't ignore this. It's one of the earliest warning signs and the easiest to catch.

2. Gurgling Sounds in Toilets or Drains

If you hear gurgling sounds when you flush or run water - especially in fixtures on the opposite side of the house — your tank may be full or your drain field may be saturated. The system is struggling to move water through.

3. Sewage Odors Inside or Outside

This one is hard to miss. Foul, rotten-egg smells inside your home (especially near drains) or outside near your tank or drain field mean gases are escaping where they shouldn't be.

Outside odors near the drain field area are a strong sign the soil is saturated and no longer filtering waste properly.

4. Wet or Soggy Spots in Your Yard

If you notice patches of wet, spongy ground in your yard — especially near where you think your drain field is — that's a serious red flag. Liquid waste is surfacing instead of being absorbed into the soil.

This is often accompanied by a foul smell and unusually lush, dark green grass in that area.

5. Unusually Green Grass Over the Drain Field

Speaking of green grass — if one patch of your yard is noticeably greener and growing faster than the rest, it may be getting "fertilized" by partially treated sewage from a failing drain field.

Most people see this as a good thing at first. It's not.

6. Sewage Backing Up Into the House

This is the one nobody wants to experience. If sewage is coming up through floor drains, toilets, or tub drains, your system has reached capacity or is completely blocked. This is an emergency — stop using water in your home and call a septic professional immediately.

7. High Nitrate Levels in Your Well Water

If you're on well water and your annual water test shows elevated nitrates, your septic system may be leaching waste into the groundwater. This is a health risk and a sign of a drain field that is no longer functioning properly.

What to Do If You Notice These Signs

Don't wait. The longer a failing septic system runs, the more damage it does — to your drain field, your yard, and potentially your groundwater.

  1. Stop using water as much as possible — every flush adds to an already stressed system
  2. Call a licensed septic company — they can pump the tank, inspect the system, and diagnose the problem
  3. Don't try to "fix" it yourself — adding more bacteria or additives to a failing system won't save a collapsed drain field
